Through a combination of classroom and distance learning formats, UMUC provides educational opportunities for lifelong learning to a variety of students in Maryland and around the world and has earned a worldwide reputation for excellence as a comprehensive virtual university. UMUC serves its students and clients through bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs, certificate programs, noncredit professional development and customized programs, and conference services at its Inn and Conference Center in Adelphi, Maryland.

  • UMUC is the 12th largest degree-granting university in the United States. 
  • The Board of Regents projects that UMUC’s enrollments will grow by 101% by 2015.

UMUC is a world leader in online education

  • UMUC is one of the largest public providers of online higher education in the nation.
  • In fiscal year (FY) 2006, UMUC had 153,000 online course enrollments.
  • Currently, UMUC offers more than 90 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and certificates fully online. In FY 2006, UMUC offered 600 distinct courses online.

UMUC is a Maryland institution addressing Maryland’s needs

  • In fall 2006, UMUC served 19,827 Maryland residents.
  • In FY 2006, UMUC offered on-site instruction at 21 sites throughout Maryland.
  • Maryland residents represented 59% of UMUC’s FY 2006 stateside online course enrollments. 
  • In fall 2006, more than 40% of stateside undergraduate students had spent some time at a Maryland community college before coming to UMUC.

UMUC is a global institution

  • Currently, UMUC enrolls 90,000 students worldwide.
  • In FY 2006, UMUC’s overseas divisions offered on-site classes in 24 countries throughout the world, enrolling 42,879 individual students in undergraduate and graduate programs.

UMUC provides access to higher education for minority students

  • In fall 2006, 32% of UMUC’s stateside students were African Americans; minority students comprised 43% of total enrollments—UMUC currently enrolls more African American students than any other public university in Maryland, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). 
  • In FY 2006, 207 African American students graduated from UMUC’s stateside undergraduate information technology programs.
  • In FY 2006, 30% of all degrees were awarded to African American students. 

UMUC provides higher education opportunities to working adults

  • Four out of five undergraduate students enrolled in UMUC’s stateside programs are also working full time.
  • In fall 2006, the median age for students enrolled in UMUC’s stateside undergraduate programs was 32 years old.

UMUC is the senior academic institution delivering higher education to our military

  • Currently, UMUC enrolls close to 60,000 active-duty military servicemembers, reserves, dependents, and veterans.
  • In FY 2006, UMUC enrolled more than 8,400 active-duty military students through its stateside online and on-site programs. 
  • UMUC maintains a physical presence on every major military installation in Maryland.
