Doctor of Management Application Information

Student Profile

Each student's focus is on learning ways to integrate their real-world professional experiences into their scholarly work and expand their leadership and applied research level within the field of management. Our students are committed to completing a demanding doctoral program, which requires a minimum of 25 to 35 hours per week and one on-campus mandatory residency each term.

Eligibility

Doctor of Management applicants must submit the following materials by the published deadlines:

  1. Official transcript indicating successful completion of a master's degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited university (transcript required)
  2. Completion of the Doctor of Management Application for Admission
  3. A current and up-to-date resume
  4. A personal statement (see the Application Instructions and Required Documents section, below, for guidelines on writing the personal statement)
  5. Two letters of reference, one professional and one academic (see Application Instructions and Required Documents section below)


NOTE:
A completed admissions application must be submitted and reviewed for completion before enrollment in DMGT 600. A grade of A or B is required in order to be granted official admission to the DM Program. If a grade of "C" is earned, then the applicant will have the option to repeat the course only once. If a grade of "F" is earned, then the applicant will be denied admission and cannot re-apply to the Doctor of Management program. The DMGT 600 requirement may only be waived for applicants who submit a GMAT total score at the 75th percentile or GRE general test (verbal and quantitative sections) scores at the 75th percentile for each section. (Test scores can be no more than five years old at the time of application.)

The official GMAT or GRE score report must be sent directly to UMUC. When taking these exams, you must use the following codes to ensure that your test scores are mailed to UMUC:

  • GMAT - SQT-QH-73
  • GRE - 5804
 

Admission to the Doctoral Program is Competitive

Admission to the Doctor of Management program is competitive; meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission to the program is based on the combination of all requirements, not any single item by itself.

Admissions Application Process

  1. Complete UMUC on-line application for admission
  2. Pay $100.00 non-refundable application fee
  3. Submit all supplemental documents (as detailed below) by published application deadline
 

Documents Required to Complete your Application

  1. Personal Statement
    Complete a personal statement that includes the following:
    1. Explain how your professional managerial experience and academic background make you an ideal candidate for doctoral study. (One page.)
    2. Describe your specific area of management interest. Explain how conducting research in this management area will help you fulfill your career objectives. (One page.)
    3. Select four articles that are scholarly, peer-reviewed, and academic research-based. Explain each article's theoretical and methodological relevance to your chosen area of management research. Precisely describe why and how the research in each article selection pertains to your area of research interest in the management field. Indicate the strengths and weaknesses of each article's research. (One page, per article.)
    4. Describe your future career goals upon completion of this program. (One page.)
    5. Include a reference list using American Psychological Association style. (One page.)
    6. Please include in-text citations throughout your personal statement, where applicable.
  2. Résumé
    Please submit a complete résumé of your professional and educational experience.
  3. Recommendation Forms
    1. Submit one Academic Recommendation Form in a sealed envelope*
    2. Submit one Professional Recommendation Form in a sealed envelope

      *If you do not have an academic recommendation, you may submit two professional recommendations.
  4. Transcripts
    Include official transcripts from the institution that conferred your graduate degree. The transcripts must be in their original sealed envelopes. Applicants who have attended UMUC (stateside or in Asia or Europe) do not need to request a UMUC transcript. However, dates of attendance must be listed on the application form.

    • If you received your master's degree from an institution outside of the United States, please refer to International Students—Graduate Admission Requirements.
    • Applicants who have attended University of Maryland University College (stateside or in Asia or Europe) do not need to request a UMUC transcript. However, dates of attendance must be listed on the application form.
