Overview of Specializations
This program offers four specializations:
Lead the bioinformatics efforts of government and businesses as an analyst, manager, instructor, and more. With a broad range of applied skills, you'll be equipped for a variety of high visibility positions.
- Biosecurity and Biodefense
Today, homeland defense and associated areas of concern have created a demand for professionals with current knowledge in security-related areas. Your expertise in the areas of bioterrorism, threat analysis and response, biodefense and information technology will ensure your rapid career advancement.
- Biotechnology Management
Get the broad-based education you need for managerial and executive positions in biotechnology. A deep understanding of biotechnology as a commercial enterprise, combined with essential management skills, will make you an indispensable asset in the workplace.
- Biotechnology Regulatory Affairs
As the field of biotechnology grows, so does the need for skilled regulatory affairs professionals with a firm grasp of the policy issues facing the industry. Your advanced knowledge of best practices in clinical trials, laboratory and manufacturing practices, quality control and assurance, bioethics, and the business of global biotechnology will help increase your value in the marketplace.
The graduates of this program will be able to:
- Have a greater grasp of the technologies currently in use in the biotechnology industry.
- Gain an understanding of the regulatory role of federal and state governmental agencies as well as international bodies and professional groups.
- Understand the "business of biotechnology," including financial, strategic, and human resource management in the industry.
- Have increased knowledge of bioinformatics.
The curriculum requires 36 credits of coursework and is divided into 15 credits of required program core coursework, and 21 credits of required coursework, including a 3-credit capstone course, from one of the program specializations.
Students with any educational background can enter this program but those without a molecular biology background are required to take a college level molecular biology course prior to the required program core.
Earn a second degree by completing just a few additional courses.
Master of Science in Biotechnology / Master of Business Administration
Students must complete all requirements for the first degree before beginning the second degree. This dual degree is one-directional. The MBA must be earned second. Degree requirements for both programs must be completed within seven years.
