Advances in communications and computer technology have changed education in terms of delivery, instructional strategies, and student engagement. Innovative instructional strategies of blended or flipped classrooms and the use of open-source, web-based resources, collaborative tools, video resources, and mobile devices can engage learners and increase student achievement. Many educators are looking to expand their skills in these areas to become more creative and innovative integrators of technology into learning experiences.
To meet this demand, UMUC offers the Master of Education in Instructional Technology as an advanced degree program that focuses on integrating technology in the preK-12 schools to strengthen and transform teaching and learning. The program provides the knowledge and skills needed to incorporate technology effectively into pre-K–12 curricula, instruction, and assessment; to develop expertise in current and emerging instructional technologies; to gain deep understanding of the role of technology in the contemporary school; and to lead change efforts at the classroom, school, and district levels.
The program combines three areas of study related to the preK-12 schools:
- Curriculum and Instruction
- Technology Integration
The MEd program is designed for pre-K–12 teachers, technology integration specialists, staff developers, and administrators seeking to develop expertise in digital-age learning by using technology, mobile devices, and active learning techniques to transform teaching and learning.

Note to Students Residing in Kentucky
Students residing in Kentucky may not enroll in UMUC's MAT program or MED in Instructional Technology program until University of Maryland University College receives approval by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board. UMUC does not have information on this date yet.
Graduates of the program will be able to:
- Integrate current and emerging technologies into curriculum, instruction, and assessment, to strengthen and transform teaching and student learning.
- Extend learning beyond the classroom with blended and online experiences.
- Integrate and manage mobile learning environments.
- Assess the effectiveness of technology to support student learning.
- Use a range of technologies to communicate and collaborate with students, colleagues, parents, and other audiences.
- Apply technology to meet the needs of a diverse school population.
- Create multimedia and Web-based products that support instruction.
- Develop standards-based (Common Core), technology-supported lessons that promote global perspectives.
- Provide professional development for teachers and other educators, including recommendations for integrating technology to promote student learning.
- Lead and work with others to develop a vision for technology integration in schools, including designing technology plans and budgets; ensuring access, and acquiring resources.
- Apply classroom and school-based data, research, and reflection to make sound instructional decisions.
- Advocate for change around technology by building support and locating potential funding opportunities for educational technology projects.
Note: Applicants do not need to possess a state teaching license to enter the MEd program in order to benefit from the program. However, the MEd is not an initial teacher certification or licensure program. See UMUC's Master of Arts in Teaching program for information related to certification.
The Master of Education degree program requires 33 credits of coursework (11 courses). This coursework includes 30 credits (ten courses) of required core courses and a 3-credit integrative capstone project.
- The first nine courses must be taken in the order listed; sequential courses may be taken concurrently.
- Students must have completed 27 credits of coursework, including the first nine MEd courses, before taking EDTC 670. (Note: EDTC 670 is offered only in the fall and spring.)
- As a student in the Graduate School's Department of Education MAT program, MEd program, or certificate program in Instructional Technology Integration, you will be required to purchase a one-time $100 subscription to TK20 HigherEd before your first class begins. NCATE Accreditation Candidacy
UMUC's graduate Education department has been accepted as a candidate for Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation/National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (CAEP/NCATE) accreditation. This means that the department has met the preconditions for accreditation but is not yet accredited. This candidacy covers the Master of Arts in Teaching program for initial teacher certification and the Master of Education in Instructional Technology.
Both the MAT and the MEd in Instructional Technology are approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. The MAT is also approved by the Maryland State Department of Education as a professional education program leading to state teacher certification. UMUC is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
