Master of Arts in Teaching
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed for students who wish to earn secondary teacher certification. Successful completion of the program entitles a candidate to be recommended for Maryland Teaching Certification in specific subject areas, including: earth/space science, physics, English, mathematics, history, social studies, chemistry, biology, computer science, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Italian, and Arabic. Focus is on producing teacher candidates who can demonstrate research-based and practice validated strategies for teaching and learning, teach subject matter to a diverse student body, analyze their practice for effectiveness in promoting student learning and integrate technology to promote personal and student growth.

Students who complete the bachelor's degree from UMUC in an appropriate major (computer science, English, history, or social science), and other students who have the appropriate coursework (including biology, mathematics), can reduce the total coursework for the Master of Arts in Teaching graduate degree by up to 12 credits (two courses) and complete both degrees with a total of 138 credits of coursework. The Master of Arts in Teaching requires the successful completion of 30 credits, including 6 credits of professional internship.
- Courses must be taken in order.
- For students who are approved to take two courses per semester, EDTP 600 and EDTP 635 may be taken together and must be completed before EDTP 639. EDTP 639 and EDTP 645 may also be taken together and must be completed before EDTP 650.
Students must pass the university required content assessment prior to the student teaching internship and register for the Praxis II pedagogy exam prior to graduation. Students must provide evidence of passing the university required content assessment and registering for the Praxis II pedagogy exam. Additionally, students must successfully complete a performance-based teaching portfolio and action research project.
As a student in the Graduate School's Department of Education MAT or MEd program, you will be required to purchase a one-time $100 subscription to TK20 HigherEd before your first class begins. *Required ON-SITE Internship and Seminar: The on-site internship and seminar requires a full-time presence in an approved secondary school for a minimum of 80 in-school days over the semester and is offered only in fall and spring semesters.
Field Experience and Student Teaching Internship
The MAT Program is a clinically based teacher preparation program. Every course in the MAT program includes required field experience components in which students develop and practice their knowledge, skills, and dispositions for working effectively with diverse learners. Students in the MAT program may work with secondary students in a variety of settings, including conventional and distance-learning classrooms; urban, suburban, and rural schools; and learning communities that offer cultural, ethnic, language, and socioeconomic diversity. The program requires students to complete and document field experiences in diverse settings.
Each student is responsible for following the required procedures for arranging field experiences and classroom observations within the school district of his or her choice. While UMUC is able to provide support and assistance in securing field placements, the university cannot guarantee that all school districts will grant MAT students permission to enter the classroom. Also, states and local school districts have varying regulations and policies regarding field experiences and student teaching. Students are advised to remain informed about the student teaching requirements for their state and locality and the Department of Defense.

UMUC also offers a Master of Education (MEd) in Instructional Technology and a Master of Distance Education (MDE). These programs do not lead to teacher certification. The MEd focuses on integrating technology to strengthen teaching and learning in the K–12 schools; the MDE focuses on managing the distance education enterprise within educational, business, government, and nonprofit organizations.
Enhance your credentials! Graduates of the Master of Arts in Teaching program can elect to pursue a dual degree with the Master of Education in Instructional Technology.
Students must complete all requirements for the Master of Arts in Teaching before beginning the Master of Education in Instructional Technology.

Students are responsible for remaining informed about the teacher certification requirements of the state in which they seek to become certified. Teacher certification requirements are constantly evolving in many states. Please be sure to confirm the requirements and any reciprocity arrangements with the state's certifying agency. State specific information is available through The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification's Web site.
Note to Students Who Wish to Teach in North Carolina
Graduates of UMUC's MAT program who want to receive certification to teach in North Carolina must submit the following documentation to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction:
- Completed Form A—Application for a North Carolina Professional Educator's License
- Copy of your Maryland teaching certificate, or verification that you have graduated from the MAT program and met all Maryland requirements
- Official college transcripts and North Carolina-required test scores

Note to Students Residing in Washington State
University of Maryland University College is authorized by the Washington Student Achievement Council and meets the requirements and minimum educational standards established for degree-granting institutions under the Degree-Granting Institutions Act. This authorization is subject to periodic review and authorizes UMUC to offer specific degree programs. The council may be contacted for a list of currently authorized programs. Authorization by the council does not carry with it an endorsement by the council of the institution or its programs. Eligibility for initial educator certification in Washington is based on completion of a state-approved educator preparation program. This program is approved in Maryland. Although you may be residing in Washington while in this program, your application for educator certification in Washington will be processed as an out-of-state application. Visit the Professional Educators Standards Board for more information. Teachers are advised to contact their individual school districts to determine whether this program may qualify for teacher advancement.
NCATE Accreditation Candidacy
UMUC's graduate Education department has been accepted as a candidate for Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation/National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (CAEP/NCATE) accreditation. This means that the department has met the preconditions for accreditation but is not yet accredited. This candidacy covers the Master of Arts in Teaching program for initial teacher certification and the Master of Education in Instructional Technology.
Both the MAT and the MEd in Instructional Technology are approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. The MAT is also approved by the Maryland State Department of Education as a professional education program leading to state teacher certification. UMUC is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
State authorization to provide a program related to the preparation of teachers or other P-12 school/system personnel does not indicate eligibility for an Alabama certificate. Applicants for an Alabama certificate based on reciprocity must meet Alabama's test requirements and submit a valid, renewable professional educator certificate/license issued by another state at the degree level, grade level, and in the teaching field or area of instructional support for which an Alabama certificate is sought and for which Alabama issues a certificate. Applicants for Alabama certification in an area of administration must also document at least three years of full-time employment as an administrator in a P-12 school system(s).
