Our Students Are Our Story
Your learning experience will be enriched by the diverse group of highly motivated military and civilian students who choose UMUC.
Most University of Maryland University College students are busy professionals looking to improve their opportunities for career advancement or make a career change.
They include our active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve students who want to use their military education benefits, financial aid, scholarships, and other payment options and position themselves for successful military careers or prepare to separate from the armed forces.
Many of our military-affiliated students and attend school part-time to help balance their educational goals with their other commitments, including their careers and families.
Our students come to us from every branch of the military, and many transfer in credits from military experience or college coursework.
Student Perspectives on the Military and UMUC
Here's what our students and alumni are saying about why UMUC was the right choice for them.
"The education was tremendous. It provided fantastic opportunities for those of us that were prepared to take advantage of it. UMUC provided the opportunity. We had to move out and do something about it."
James E. Freeze
"UMUC was willing to take all of my previous credits, and with the flexibility that UMUC offered, I was able to knock out my undergrad degree and went on and finished my master’s … and had all that lined up before I went and retired from the military."
"UMUC provides the opportunity a lot of times for students to apply their knowledge to a real-life scenario. … I think that's very effective."
"The hybrid format and the online options give adult students some flexibility … great options for an active lifestyle."

The VeteransSuccess Club is the UMUC chapter of Student Veterans of America. The student-run club is another way the university supports our veterans as they pursue higher education and transition into civilian life. We've hosted a wide range of events, from résumé workshops to presentations on internships to talks on mental health issues.
