About the ADE Web Site

Welcome! The Accessibility in Distance Education (ADE) Web site has been designed to meet the needs of faculty teaching students with disabilities in the online environment. The ADE site explains accessibility problems that students with disabilities are likely to encounter in navigating Web-based resources, and shows faculty members how they can address and resolve these problems. The site also seeks to provide faculty with information about different types of disabilities, relevant laws, and best accessibility practices.

Content development has been aided by nationally known accessibility experts and guided from the outset by the Web Accessibility in Mind (WebAIM) project, Utah State University. The site has been reviewed extensively and has been rigorously tested for accessibility, using the Robust Accessibility Management Program (RAMP) developed by Deque Systems, Chantilly, Virginia.

The ADE Web site has been produced by the Center for the Virtual University (CVU) and is housed in the Center for Accessibility in Distance Education (CADE), both in the Office of Distance Education and Lifelong Learning, University of Maryland University College. Please visit the CADE Web site for information about further new initiatives aimed at enhancing accessibility in online education.

It is our hope that online faculty members will find this site attractive and useful for their purposes. If you would like to send us feedback about the site or sign up to be on our mailing list, visit the Contact Us page.

The ADE Web site has been funded with generous support from NEC Foundation of America and Verizon Foundation.
