Landfill Progression Simulation

This simulation illustrates variations in leachate flow rate and methane gas during the life of a landfill.

Landfill managers must understand these variations in order to:

  1. properly remove leachate as it accumulates, thereby reducing the threat of groundwater contamination
  2. use methane gas to produce steam and generate electricity.

Two versions of this simulation are available: an interactive Macromedia Flash version (enhanced with additional graphics and animations; requires the Macromedia Flash Player) and a non-interactive, accessible HTML version.  Both versions contain the same content.

Please view the HTML version of the simulation if you have technical problems with Flash or if you would like a printable version of the content.

Download the Macromedia Flash Player. Visit the Macromedia Flash Player download center to download and install the latest (free) version of the Macromedia Flash Player. Not sure if you have the Macromedia Flash Player? Visit the Test Macromedia Web Players page to find out.
