This section presents three different examples of Web-based media used in actual online courses, and describes revisions made to improve accessibility. Chosen carefully to illustrate the range of technologies in use in online learning, these examples also offer insight into the varying levels of complexity of the revisions. As you will see, accessibility improvements were dramatic for each of these sites:
- Diane Finley (Prince George's Community College, Maryland) uses her Web site as an online resource for course information, including syllabi, schedules, and supplemental readings.
- JoAnne Rolle (UMUC) uses video and PowerPoint slides to explain how to use a business software tool.
- Robert Beauchamp (UMUC) uses multimedia Flash animations to illustrate environmental processes.
Each of these revised sites provides accessible Web content that is creative, attractive and media-rich. With careful thinking and some additional effort, a few significant changes to instructional media can make content accessible to everyone.
The examples in this section are intended to present models for appropriate online accommodation. Your university's office of disability services may be able
to offer you further information about accessibility requirements.
