Picture of Baruch at computer.

Baruch is blind and uses a talking text browser, called a "screen reader," to navigate the Web.

Baruch e-mails Allison because he is unable to find his way around the class Web site using his screen reader software.

Question. Why can't Baruch navigate the class Web site?

Wide view of computer monitor; web page with graphic menu buttons.

Allison's menu buttons are graphics, and they don't have "alt text." Alt text is a description of an image. It is read by a screen reader in place of the image.

Since Allison's menu buttons don't have alt text, Baruch can't identify what each button links to, and he can't navigate the site.

Question. How can Allison fix the problem?

Allison at computer; Close up of Syllabus button with pop-up alt text.

Allison can solve the problem by creating alt text for every graphic. The alt text should clearly describe the function of the button or image.
