Picture of Carole watching video.

Carole notifies Allison that she is hearing impaired, and can't hear the narration of the digital video included in the lessons.

Question. How can Allison provide Carole with the digital video narration?

Wide view of computer monitor; Carole watching video with captions.

There are two ways Allison can provide an alternate version of the narration -- create a transcript or provide captions. A transcript is a text version of the narration in the video. Captions synchronize the transcript with the video.

Carole prefers captions. Allison should make both options available for her digital video.

Question. How can Allison create a transcript and captions?

Allison on phone.

Allison can ask that the publisher of the video post a transcript online. Or, she can request a copy of the transcript from the video publisher, convert the transcript into HTML, and post it on her Web site.

Captioning is a more time-consuming process. If the video publisher cannot supply captions, Allison may be able to work with a technical support team on campus. She could also review a Web tutorial and add the captions herself.
