Leroy Merrit Center for the Art of Joseph Sheppard
UMUC is expanding its Arts Program and Adelphi campus to include this impressive new facility designed by well-known Baltimore architect Jim Grieves. It is intended to be a center for lifelong learning and an enduring tribute to the accomplished painter and sculptor, Joseph Sheppard.

The Doris Patz Collection
THE DORIS PATZ COLLECTION OF MARYLAND ARTISTS at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was the first, and is one of the largest, bodies of work within UMUC's Maryland Artists Collections. For more than 20 years, the Doris Patz Collection has garnered recognition for many of the state's talented artists and has provided a venue in which the people of Maryland and visitors from around the world can enjoy these exceptional artworks.The collection is named in honor of its founder and patron, Doris Patz.
Mrs. Patz is a musician and a writer with a lifelong commitment to the arts. A violinist, she studied music at the Carnegie Technical School of Fine Arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was a member of the Baltimore Women’s Symphony and the Gettysburg Symphony Orchestra and taught violin in Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Mrs. Patz is also a talented author. She has written and produced musical shows in Baltimore and has won awards for her poetry and fiction. A patron of the arts in Maryland, Mrs. Patz has organized several creative arts exhibitions and has worked with organizations to sponsor and promote community art programs. She has been a board member for the Baltimore Music Club and for Performing Arts for Children's Education, and she served as city and state president of the National League of American Penwomen, Inc. In 1981, Mrs. Patz established a collection of art by Maryland artists at UMUC, after several years of soliciting donations from artists and collectors throughout the state.
The collection includes the works of established and emerging artists who were born or trained in Maryland, or who lived, taught, or worked in the state for a significant portion of their careers. Paintings, sculptures, and other artworks from the Doris Patz Collection are on display throughout the UMUC Inn and Conference Center, which is open to the public seven days a week.This makes Maryland art uniquely accessible to scholars and students and to the Inn and Conference Center's more than 100,000 annual visitors.
Through Mrs. Patz's continued efforts, the Doris Patz Collection has grown to comprise more than 200 works of art in a wide variety of media and styles. She and her family have also endowed the collection to provide for curating, documenting, and maintaining the artworks for years to come. In 2002, Maryland Citizens for the Arts Foundation awarded Mrs. Patz the Governor's Art award for establishing this invaluable art collection at UMUC.
Today, the Doris Patz Collection of Maryland Artists showcases such nationally and internationally celebrated Maryland artists as Eugene Leake, Grace Hartigan, Amalie Rothschild, and many others. UMUC is grateful to Mrs. Patz; her vision and generosity have created and sustained this distinguished art collection.
ABOUT THE UMUC COLLECTIONS
Since 1978, University of Maryland University College has proudly shown works from a large collection of international and Maryland artists at the UMUC Inn and Conference Center. The center is located in Adelphi, Maryland, a few miles from the nation’s capital.
Our Asian Collection includes one of the most important Japanese print collections in the United States. The Art of China collection contains pieces dating from the Sung Dynasty (960–1279 A.D.) through the 19th century, a historical reach of 10 centuries. Through the years, our collection of Maryland artists has grown substantially. Today, we house one of the largest collections of Maryland art in the state and provide a prestigious and wide-ranging forum for emerging and established artists.
