A
number of water subjects of Annapolis Harbor during this time were
inspired by Koch's memories as a young boy of sailing on Lake Ontario
with his father. These paintings introduce a monumentality of form
and three-dimensional solidity that will remain a hallmark of the
artist's oeuvre. They also express his sensitive understanding
and mastery of the momentary light effects of the sun as it plays
on the water from dawn to late afternoon. |
