UMUC Faculty Arts Invitational Exhibition: “Threads of a Common Presence”
Meet the Artist/Opening Reception
May 28, 2009, 6–8 p.m.
Exhibit Dates
May 3–June 28, 2009
The annual UMUC Faculty Arts Invitational Exhibition features the art work of UMUC faculty members. This year's faculty curator, Joan Bevelaqua, has expanded the exhibition to include guest artists from other University System of Maryland campuses. By special invitation, the artists will exhibit their works alongside many of their colleagues. The exhibition explores the common threads in art for the 21st century.
The exhibitions's goal is to provide broader access to art and a professional venue where faculty members can showcase their work. Additionally, the exhibition serves to promote and support local artists and introduce new techniques, styles and vocabularies in art.
Color in Freedom Embarks on a New Journey
Joseph Holston's Color in Freedom: Journey Along the Underground Railroad exhibit will embark on a cultural tour around the country for the next two years; possibly longer abroad. In November 2008, it opened in the main gallery of UMUC Inn and Conference Center with resounding success. Students and patrons studied the works for a glimpse into the artist’s creative talent and the history of the Underground Railroad. Thousands visited the virtual tour. On March 2, 2009, the exhibition left for Muncie, Indiana.
UMUC alumni and friends are encouraged to see this spectacular work as it tours the United States and abroad.
Coming Soon: Full Color Catalog/Book about the Art of Herman Maril
Continuing its mission to support artists, UMUC will produce a full color catalog/book about the art of Herman Maril. The book will be completed by summer 2009 and available through the Arts Program Web site.
Early in the history of the Arts Program at UMUC, Maryland artist Herman Maril was a central figure. He assisted Bylee Massey, the founder of the Arts Program at UMUC, in the development of the program, along with many other supporters of the arts. Additionally, he taught art at the University of Maryland, College Park for 30 years (1947-1977).
As a professor and artistic activist, he helped develop the nation’s visual artists through instruction and one-on-one training with local artists in the community. Maril spent a lifetime teaching, learning and creating art. His works have been exhibited globally and are in many major museums and private collections throughout the country. To date, UMUC owns the largest single collection of works of art by Herman Maril in the country—a collection that documents six decades of the artist's career. UMUC's Arts Program is proud to organize a publication of the art of Herman Maril to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday.
