A community-based scholarship program for students in need
Through Better Opportunities Through Online Education (BOTOE), you can successfully complete a UMUC undergraduate certificate program and develop the knowledge and skills you need to increase your earning potential in today’s workplace.
BOTOE is a collaborative venture between UMUC and community-based organizations in the Baltimore–Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Since 2002, the scholarship program has helped many determined students take a major step toward achieving economic self-sufficiency.
What it Takes to Become a BOTOE Scholar
This program is designed for new students who have not yet begun their coursework and who:
- Have a full- or part-time job
- Wish to attend a major university
- Have defined goals and expectations
- Earned a high school diploma or GED
- Know how to use a computer and the Internet
- Are willing to accept academic and personal support
- Are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens*
To become a BOTOE scholar, you will first meet with a community sponsor to discuss your interest in the scholarship program. Your sponsor will assist you throughout the application/interview process, and will submit your application materials on your behalf to UMUC.
*As defined by the Department of Education and the FAFSA application for applying for federal aid.
BOTOE Provides the Tools You Need
With BOTOE support, you'll be on your way to success. Here's what you get with your scholarship:
- Admission to UMUC
- A personal computer, printer, and a stipend to assist with Internet costs
- Full tuition, including money for textbooks and supplies
- Access to comprehensive student support services, including academic advising and career counseling
Five Certificate Programs Offer You Real-World Training
BOTOE scholars take online college courses and pursue an undergraduate certificate. As an online learner, you are able to study whenever and wherever it is convenient, without the limitations of time or place. The following certificate options are available:
- Desktop Publishing*
Prepares you to use popular software programs in desktop publishing
- Introductory Accounting*
Prepares you to work as a bookkeeper, accounting clerk, or managerial accountant in public or private industry. - General Computer Applications*
Teaches you basic computer concepts and skills that today’s employers demand. - General Management Studies*
Prepares you to work as an entry-level manager or supervisor. - Workplace Communications*
Prepares you to work in entry-level positions that require writing, editing, and basic desktop publishing skills.
* A prerequisite introductory online (four- to six-week) noncredit study skills course—entitled “Becoming a Master Student”—is also required.
