Program Description and Schedule

Students participating in the 16-credit Criminal Justice Leadership Development program are introduced to current management and leadership theories and practices and are responsible for producing solutions for their own agency. Students learn about their leadership style, how to incorporate strategic thought processes into their work style, and how to deal with a variety of management issues that are unique to leaders in the criminal justice workforce.

Each course has an on-site and online component, as well as a final project:

  • On-site: The first week of each course provides traditional on-site, face-to-face instruction and includes guest lecturers, group work and role-playing.

  • Online: Weeks two through seven are conducted online and include lectures, weekly conference participation, study group work and written assignments.

  • Final project: Students present their group project to a panel that consists of department leadership and UMUC instructors.

CCJS 470: Leadership and Time Management for Criminal Justice Professionals

Covers major leadership theories, including trait, behavioral and situational power/influence (motivation). Topics also include time-management techniques, holding effective meetings and delegating responsibility.

CCJS 472: Organizational Problem Solving for Criminal Justice Professionals

Topics include methods of distinguishing symptoms from problems, prioritizing, implementation and sustainment techniques, ethics and decisionmaking. Discussion also covers diversity, cynicism, personality traits, teamwork, group work, communication and relationship building.

CCJS 474: Strategic Planning for Managers for Criminal Justice Professionals

Explores how to identify subtle changes within an organization, successfully implement change, and recover failed efforts. Also includes techniques to minimize employee resistance.

CCJS 476: Management Efficiency and Effectiveness for Criminal Justice Professionals

Topics include methodologies of evolution, performance management, tracking and measuring, establishing goals and objectives, and distinguishing outputs and outcomes. Also covers needs-assessments, development and implementation plan, and resource identification.
