What can I do with a degree in Accounting?

Accountants are responsible for keeping accurate records, making sure taxes are paid on time, as well as ensuring that budgeting and finance operations run smoothly. Businesses, organizations, and individuals rely on accountants to provide consultation on budget analysis, financial and investment planning, information technology consulting, and limited legal services. They are responsible for assuring that the business is in good ethical standing in all tax-related and financial matters.

Breaking into the accounting field requires state licensure through the Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) exam. CPAs are licensed by their State Board of Accountancy and eligibility details vary by state. Most states require a bachelor's degree in accounting to be able to sit for the CPA exam, though some will accept an equivalent number of education hours. Accountants may also seek certification through a variety of professional societies.

A degree in Accounting will open doors in a variety of fields. Accountants may pursue careers in the the corporate, government, public, and education sectors. Others work for accounting firms or as sole practitioners. Opportunities for advancement are improved with master's and doctoral degrees and additional certification.
