A Journey Along the Underground Railroad

The Color in Freedom: Journey Along the Underground Railroad Educational Symposium and Gallery Tour with the Artist was held on November 1, 2008, presented by the University of Maryland David C. Driskell Center, at the UMUC Inn and Conference Center. This full-day event featured presentations by scholars that examined the layered history of the Underground Railroad, its visual presentation by artists, as well as myths and symbolism associated with the Underground Railroad. About The Driskell Center

The Driskell Center at the University of Maryland celebrates the legacy of David C. Driskell—distinguished university professor emeritus of art, artist, art historian, collector, and curator—by preserving the rich heritage of African American visual art and culture. Established in 2001, the Center provides an intellectual home for artists, museum professionals, art administrators, and scholars of color, broadening the field of African diasporic studies.

By bringing together the visual arts and the field of diasporic studies in fluid and dynamic ways, the Center offers creative and curricular programming to the University of Maryland and to the greater Maryland and Washington, D.C. communities, while serving as a national leader in the field of African American art and culture.
