What is a Hybrid Course at UMUC?
A hybrid course at UMUC blends computer-based, online learning with face-to-face interaction. Each course has been designed to meet at least half of the time at one of our regional locations, thus allowing students to benefit from in-person time with the instructor and other classmates. Throughout the course, students are expected to complete all assignments in accordance with the course syllabus. You may find the course planner helpful to better manage your hybrid courses, as well as online classes. As with all courses at UMUC, it is advisable to log into the online classroom one week prior to the start date to review and print your syllabus.
Getting Ready
Check your MyUMUC registration for start dates and class location. Be sure to check the location before you head to class in case there has been a change. Also, please ensure that you have directions and allow extra time, especially if you are unfamiliar with the location.
If you are unfamiliar with online learning at UMUC, take the WebTycho online orientation.
Hybrid classes start online the first day of the session, not the day of the first on-site class meeting! Be sure to log in to WebTycho one week before the start of a class session. Your instructor may provide important information in the class announcements related to preparing for the course.
If you are not familiar with the location of your on-site classroom, try a dry run to make sure you know how to get there—locate the closest bus stop, where to park, the location of the building and room. See a list of locations and links to directions and maps.
Print, review, and familiarize yourself with the syllabus and class schedule. Note the dates and location of class meetings and use a course planner to help you map out your meeting times and assignments. Visit the Connect@UMUC site to download the latest planner.
Sign up to receive text or e-mail alerts about emergencies, weather alerts and closings for your specific class location.
Tips for Success in Class
Participate fully in both formats—your final course grade will be affected if you only participate in discussions online or if you only show up to class without participating in online activities or discussions.
Speak with your instructor about his or her expectations for participation if you are not clear.
Be sure you understand the course schedule and what is due when and where.
Follow the cues from your instructor about the best ways to communicate with the class or obtain important information. Instructors will post regular updates in the class announcements area of the WebTycho classroom and may expect you to check there first before asking your question. Some instructors may prefer you post to an online questions conference.
