Navigating Your Experience

Credits 0–30

Below are some tips and suggestions for students who currently have completed between 0–30 credits toward their degree. You can click on the categories below to view the tips.

Degree Program Progress

  • Visit the MyUMUC student portal regularly to view your progress and any outstanding documentation.

  • Print out the Student Planner use it to plan your semester. You can find the Student Planner for the current semester in the Advisor Corner of the Connect@UMUC Web site.

  • Contact an academic advisor to discuss your progress in your program. Check which of your courses require prerequisites, so that you can schedule your courses properly.

  • Explore the various alternative credit options including Credit by Examination to see if they would be a fit for you. 

Academic Resources

Career Preparation

  • Document your career interests and begin researching your industry.

  • Find a career mentor to help you develop a career strategy and learn your desired industry. (See the Art of Mentoring article.)

  • Find out what coursework and experience you need to successfully enter your industry or to excel in your current field.

  • Meet students in your classes and in the academic clubs who share the same or similar career aspirations and commit to staying in touch with them.

  • Explore UMUC's Career Services Career Planning and Getting Started Web site and find out how your academic interests match your career interests.

  • Put your education to work by applying what you learn in each course to something valuable in your desired career.

  • Develop an ongoing portfolio of lessons learned, assignments, experiences, and other items to ensure you are ready to demonstrate your preparation for your desired career.

Campus Community Involvement

  • Learn about the Student Advisory Council and discover how you can be an active participant.

  • Review the list of online Academic Student Clubs and join one or more that meets your interests. Student Clubs enable students to meet other students with similar interests, provide student and leadership development opportunities, and help students to learn more about career fields. 

  • Participate in the annual History Essay or the Social Sciences Essay competitions.

  • Join UMUC's social network by following UMUC on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Flickr, and the Experience UMUC blog.
