John Gardner
John Gardner is responsible for providing Citi Global Wealth Advisory Services' high net worth clients with sophisticated wealth planning advice, particularly in connection with intergenerational transfer strategies, estate planning, international planning, philanthropic techniques, business succession, executive compensation, diversification strategies, and risk management.
Prior to joining Citi, Gardner served in a similar capacity for Legg Mason, where he was Director of Operations for Wealth Advisory and Planning Services. Before rejoining Legg Mason in 2002, Gardner provided technical advice in these areas in his role in the National Tax Offices of the multinational accounting firms of Anderson, KPMG, and Coopers & Lybrand. He also has prior experience in the IRS National Office.
Gardner is a past Chair of the AICPA Trust, Estate, and Gift Tax Technical Resources Panel and is a member of the Steering Committee of the AICPA Advanced Estate Planning Conference. He has written and lectured extensively on numerous topics, including generation-skipping transfer taxes, managing an IRS estate tax audit, planning in a changing interest rate environment, and charitable giving techniques. He received his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Duke University, and is Series 7 licensed.
