Instructional Services and Support

CSI assists academic administrators, faculty, and students with the effective adoption of new technologies. CSI staff design and develop in-person and online trainings and tutorials to demonstrate how these new technologies can be used to accomplish customized objectives. CSI staff have assisted various academic units with technology integration as shown in the following examples:

  • Tech Skills/Software Tutorials
CSI has developed an extensive library of tutorials that assists faculty in updating and enhancing their current technical skills. The library includes tutorials for new technologies as well as changes to currently used technologies. New tutorials are added on a regular basis.
  • Wimba Support Tutorials
CSI designed and developed online tutorials and documentation for using Wimba Live Classroom and Voice Tools; in-depth documentation was provided for student and faculty usage of seven different software tools. To view the documentation, visit Help@UMUC and select "Wimba" from the Technical Support drop list in the left column, under Narrow Search.
  • Wimba Training and Demonstrations
CSI designed and developed synchronous and asynchronous online training materials and demonstrations to assist UMUC's worldwide faculty with using Wimba Live Classroom and Voice Tools. The trainings, offered through the Center for Teaching and Learning, walked faculty through the process of enhancing their online classrooms with new, media-rich technologies and using those technologies in pedagogically sound ways.
  • Enhanced Tycho Training and Tutorials
CSI facilitated the integration of WebTycho's Enhanced Conferencing, Messaging, and Portfolio features by developing and conducting face-to-face training sessions for academic directors and administrators and by collaborating with the Center for Teaching and Learning to develop an online training course and materials for UMUC's worldwide faculty.
  • Degree Audit Report - Undergraduate Student Tutorial
CSI developed an online tutorial using Adobe Captivate for UMUC's Degree Progress Report for undergraduate students. The online tutorial assists students with understanding their academic progress report, which shows them a list of courses that have been accepted in transfer, UMUC's courses that are completed, and the remaining credits needed for a degree.
  • UMUC Summer Faculty Leadership Institute
Since 2004, CSI has supported the staff of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at its Summer Institutes by collaborating on presentations and hands-on workshops. CSI has helped design and instruct several workshops, including Impatica for PowerPoint, Audacity, Expectations for Teaching and Best Practices Research, and How to Apply Instructional Design Principles.
  • Students with Disabilities at UMUC
CSI, in conjunction with Veteran and Disabled Student Affairs, produced an audio-enhanced presentation to train faculty on accommodations for students with disabilities. Distributed through online communities of practice, the presentation discussed general legal concepts, UMUC procedures, and guidelines on reasonable accommodations. It also included examples of different kinds of accommodations to help faculty understand how to apply the concepts to their own classrooms and teaching.
