2002-2003 Teaching Excellence Award Recipients
The Undergraduate School
William P. Peirce has been a UMUC faculty member
since 1991, teaching communication studies and English. His professional life
has centered on teaching and learning; recently he has focused on developing
strategies for teaching, thinking, and promoting intellectual development in
online classes. He has also published articles in a number of journals and has
created a compilation of Web resources related to the teaching of critical
thinking and reasoning. Students have praised Peirce’s in-depth feedback and
prompt responses to questions. He holds an MA in English from the University of
Maryland, College Park.
Kathleen W. Sander has taught American history at
UMUC since 1994. She is the author of The Business of Charity: The Woman’s
Exchange Movement, 1832–1900, as well as numerous magazine and newspaper
articles on 19th-century history. Her teaching philosophy involves sharing her
passion and inspiration from history, and she seeks to help students understand
the principles of democracy, civil liberties, equality, tolerance, and economic
opportunity, and how the past continues to influence our everyday lives. Sander
holds a PhD in American studies from University of Maryland, College Park.
The Graduate School
Monica Sava Bolesta has taught
Research Methods for Managers and other MBA courses since 1995 for UMUC's
Graduate School. She brings years of statistical analysis, survey methodology,
and management consulting experience to the classroom, and students laud her
accessibility, responsiveness, high level of interaction, and constructive
feedback on assignments. Bolesta holds a PhD in measurement, statistics, and
evaluation from University of Maryland, College Park.
Brian L.
Usilaner has taught at the Graduate School at UMUC
since 1984. He is a management consultant with more than 30 years of experience
in organizational improvement efforts, specializing in strategies to enhance
organizational effectiveness and customer satisfaction. Usilaner also served as
an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for six consecutive
years, including three years as a senior examiner, and now serves as an alumni
examiner. Students have praised Usilaner’s ability to apply theory to practical,
real-world situations, and to help them learn how to do the same. He has helped
develop and revise Graduate School course curriculum materials, has served as a
peer mentor to new faculty members, and has also served as a panel member at the
Graduate School’s New Faculty Orientation. Usilaner holds a DSc in management
science from the George Washington University.
