Example: A hybrid session runs from May 13 to July 7, 2013. The class start date is May 13, 2013. For on-site courses, the class start date is the day of the first on-site meeting of the class. Calendar day in this chart refers to the number of days that have passed since the class start date.

Return of Tuition Assistance

If you are using TA to pay for your education and withdraw from a class prior to completing 60 percent of the class, the Department of Defense requires that UMUC return any unearned TA funds to the department based on how much of the course you completed and that you pay a portion of those returned funds. You may owe a portion of your tuition to UMUC and a portion to your military branch.

If you officially withdraw from the course, the amount of unearned TA funds is calculated from the date you withdrew. If you receive a grade of FN (failure for nonattendance), you unofficially withdrew and the amount of unearned TA funds is calculated from the date of your last participation in the course. Your TA eligibility is determined based on the following formula:

The Percent of TA Earned equals the Days Completed Before Withdrawal or Last Participation divided by the Total Number of Days in the Course.

If you withdrew due to a military service obligation, submit a request for exception, and we will work with you to ensure you are not responsible for the UMUC portion of the returned funds. For more information, contact Student Resolution and Judicial Affairs at exception.request@umuc.edu.

FAQs: Return of Tuition Assistance for Servicemembers

What is return of Tuition Assistance, and how does it impact me as a military servicemember? +

In accordance with regulations issued by the Department of Defense, return of Tuition Assistance is a calculation UMUC is required to perform to determine eligibility when a servicemember officially or unofficially withdraws from a course. If a servicemember officially or unofficially withdraws from a course and he or she did not complete more than 60 percent of the course, he or she may not be eligible for the total amount initially awarded through the TA. In cases where some or all of the Tuition Assistance must be returned to the DOD, the servicemember will be responsible for all balances on his or her UMUC student account.

What is the difference between an official withdrawal and unofficial withdrawal? +

An official withdrawal is when a student actually drops a course through MyUMUC, a military portal, or through an academic advisor. An unofficial withdrawal is when a student never attends or stops attending/participating in a course without prior approval from a professor. For unofficial withdraws, UMUC will use the last date of participation to determine if the service member completed at least 60 percent of the course.

Will I owe both UMUC and my military branch for the same class if I withdraw? +

Yes, you may owe both UMUC and your military branch but only up to a maximum of 100 percent of the total tuition cost. UMUC will work with your military branch to return unearned funds.

How will my student account be affected if I was TDY or deployed and couldn’t complete my courses? +

For servicemembers who were sent TDY or deployed, UMUC will work with you to identify a solution that does not negatively impact your student account with UMUC. Please submit a request for exception form. For more information e-mail Student Resolution and Judicial Affairs.
