The Online Guide to Writing and Research focuses mainly on the challenges of writing research papers, and as part of that interest it explains how to write summaries, abstracts, and critiques. It also has a section in chapter 3 on “Writing Essay Examinations.” These writing genres certainly do not exhaust the wide variety of assignments you may face in your undergraduate coursework.

Two kinds of writing assignments that are frequently seen in UMUC’s Online Effective Writing Center are the argumentative assignment and the article review or reaction paper. The instructions provided in this chapter are intended to help you address the challenges of these two commonly seen assignments.

  • What is an Aristotelian argument?
  • What is a Rogerian argument?
  • What are the steps involved in writing an argument?
  • What is the nature and purpose of a book or article review?
  • What is the nature and purpose of a reaction paper?
