Brief Statement About Instructor

I have an undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. When I graduated in June 1971, I was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. Upon graduation, I received an academic scholarship from the Air Force that allowed me to stay at RPI for the next year and get a Master of Science degree in management. At my first duty station, Griffiss AFB, in Rome New York, I received a Master of Science degree in system management from the University of Southern California. I was assigned to the Air Force Academy in 1979. In 1981 the Academy sponsored me for my doctoral degree. I completed my PhD in accounting at the University of Washington.

In addition to my assignment to the faculty at the Air Force Academy, I served as an aeronautical engineer for the Rome Air Development Center. I was chief of the programs office at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC), which was responsible for the flight test programs at the Center. In 1988 I was selected as a speechwriter in the office of the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense. Because my background was in management, I wrote mostly for the Deputy Secretary whose main responsibilities are the management of the Department of Defense where I worked for a little more than 3 years. I spent most of that time working for Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney and Deputy Secretary Don Atwood. I retired from the Air Force in 1991.

From 1991 to 1996 I was on the accounting faculty at George Mason University. I served as the director of the graduate accounting and tax programs for over two years. I joined UMUC in 1996 as a program director in what is now the Master of Science in management program. In January 2005 I became chair of the Business and Executive Programs department.
