MDE Introduction
Welcome to the MDE program. Online learning offers you many advantages in terms of flexibility in time and place of study, but it can present you with real challenges. Being prepared by knowing more about what is expected in graduate level work, the challenges and opportunities of online learning, and what resources you have at your disposal can really make a difference if and when the going gets tough.
This brief guide is intended to address these issues, provide you with some useful tips for being a successful online student, and introduce you to some helpful resources.
Foundations Course
OMDE 601 Foundations of Distance Education – We recommend that you take OMDE 601 as your first course in the program, so that you can master study skills, graduate writing, and basic graduate-level concepts in DE.
Academic Skills Development
Writing and other UMUC support courses are available online to provide you with the best opportunity for success in your chosen program. Though most are not required, we suggest that you consider enrolling in these courses in your first semester to get a good grounding in these basic requirements of graduate study.
UCSP 611 Introduction to Graduate Library Research Skills – This is a non-credit course which should be completed within your first 6 credits in the program. UMUC has a rather sophisticated online library system, but it requires a reasonably sophisticated set of skills to effectively use it.
Here is a list of other resourses you will find useful as you start your program:
