Post Your Chat Logs |

Principles: Provide Meaningful Alternatives, Be Flexible!
Nearly every real-time chat program provides a way to create a "text log" file—a transcript of the chat in which comments are prefaced by the participant's name. You can post these logs on your course Web site as text files or mark them up with
HTML for improved readability. Unfortunately, students will not be able to participate in real-time, but it is the best alternative if the student must participate independently.
If You Do It Wrong: Any student who misses the chat or is unable to use the chat software is locked out of participating. Students who require special input methods for text—such as a
pointer wand or
voice recognition software—might have extreme problems trying to keep up with a normal chat session.
If You Do It Right: Students who can't make it to the chat are able to read the transcript; they can then e-mail you with questions or post their comments in a class bulletin board.
You may be able to select File, then Save... to save a transcript of the chat to your hard drive. Some chat programs require you to copy and paste the text transcript into a word processing program. (To copy the chat, select the text inside the chat window, then press Ctrl + C on your keyboard). Older chat programs may have a live "chat logging" feature that saves the chat as a text file on your computer. Turn on any live chat logging feature at the beginning of the chat session.
