About the Intellectual Property Virtual Scholar Program

2006-2008 IP Scholar

The Intellectual Property Virtual Scholar Program is an ongoing initiative. Each year, the Center for Intellectual Property and Copyright in the Digital Environment will select one individual to work with the center to advance research in a particular area relevant to intellectual property.

The IP Scholar will take a leading role in advancing the center's research. The IP Scholar will:

  • Serve as a consultant to the Center for Intellectual Property (CIP).
  • Teach an online workshop on intellectual property.
  • Collaborate to write articles based on original research to be published in peer-reviewed journals of higher education or law reviews.
  • Present at the center's annual seminar on intellectual property at UMUC.
  • Develop reports on critical areas of intellectual law and/or policy for dissemination to the higher education community.
  • Become an active member of the CIP Liaison Group.

Essentially, the Virtual Scholar will carry out specific tasks to be determined, in consultation with the center at the beginning of the period of residency. These tasks can include those listed above, but is not limited to them.

While the Scholar will work mostly at his or her present location, he or she will maintain an ongoing connection with the center and general community through workshops, chat, and any other medium deemed necessary.

The objectives of the program are to:

  • Promote multi- and/or inter-disciplinary research on issues surrounding intellectual property and the digital landscape.
  • Create alliances between academic disciplines, the CIP, policy advocates, and policy makers.
  • Assess the state of knowledge on the selected topic and identify new avenues of research.
  • Provide support to individuals conducting innovative socio-legal research.
