This foundational course for the Center for Intellectual Property's Certification Program in Copyright Leadership in Higher Education at UMUC, provides an overview of copyright issues that impact higher education. This course will

provide educators, librarians, administrators, course designers and information technology professionals a framework for addressing issues such as ownership of distance education course materials, e-reserves, fair use, the TEACH Act, open access initiatives, licensing mechanisms and processes, assessment of institutional copyright policies, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and development of campus copyright awareness and education.

Important Details for this Course:

  • The foundational course has two (2) parts that total eight (8) weeks in duration. Part 1 and part 2 of the foundations course may be taken together or separate. However, both must be completed within six (6) months of each other.
  • The course is pass/fail, and participants will be evaluated on participation, copyright policy analysis and a final project about copyright education/awareness and/or policy development. All final projects will be shared with fellow participants.
  • Pricing: $1,280—CIP Community Members; $1,600—Non-Members.

Important Details about the Certification Program

  • Certification includes the foundations course, one (1) free elective workshop from the IPNA 2009-2010 Workshop Series, and a copy of The Center for Intellectual Property Handbook. Certification in good standing is maintained by participating in at least one (1) educational program via the Center for Intellectual Property each year to keep abreast of changes in copyright law and policy.

Course Objectives:

  1. Assess whether and how copyright law and policy impacts quality instruction and academic values;
  2. Describe key copyright law principles and their application to course development, instruction and libraries;
  3. Assess institutional copyright policies in light of case law and statutory requirements;
  4. Assess institutional processes for managing copyrighted information;
  5. Review various approaches to open access initiatives;
  6. Analyze the DMCA and its impact on colleges and universities;
  7. Develop potential education and policy solutions for managing copyrighted material on campus.
