Details about Simulcast Registration
The CIP Symposium in Second Life (SL) will be conducted in cooperation with the New Media Consortium (NMC) and will occur within the secure academic environment of the NMC Conference Center. Both the Second Life Community Behavioral Standards and the NMC Campus Code of Conduct will govern this educational program in SL.
If at anytime during your experience of this program in Second Life you wish to view the symposium via a simple Webcast stream, a login and password will be provided; please contact the CIP for more information. The registration fee is $225 for an individual.

| Step 1: |
Complete the Simulcast registration form, including your e-mail address and the avatar name which you will be using to participate in this program.
- Note: If CIP does not receive your avatar name and e-mail address during registration for the symposium, you will not be able to participate in this program through Second Life. The program venue will only be accessible to those avatars whose names are on the list of official registrants, and your e-mail address will be a vital point of contact.

After registering, and before the day of the symposium, you will receive a a (Second Life URL) SLURL by e-mail (the e-mail you registered with) that will give you access to the symposium venue. Please verify your ability to enter the venue. |

Because of our cooperative efforts with NMC, you may also choose to join the NMC Community by either completing NMC's Web form (choose “Join the NMC Community”) or by joining the group from within SL. (Joining the NMC Community in SL is optional.) |

Review the Second Life Community Behavioral Standards and the NMC Campus Code of Conduct, both of which will pertain to this program. |

Download and install the Second Life software.

Get a Second Life account from New Media Consortium (NMC).

Start up SL, and (automatically) proceed to the NMC Orientation Island.
- Note: This is a special orientation island for educators. If you don’t get an account from NMC in Step 2, you will proceed to the normal Orientation Island. Many find this a non-optimal experience. If you are stuck there, look for a sign in the middle of the island that allows you to leave without completing the tutorials there.
- Note: Review the Second Life Community Behavioral Standards and the NMC Campus Code of Conduct, both of which will pertain to this program.

Download and install the Second Life software.

Get a Second Life account from New Media Consortium (NMC).
- Visit the page “Enter Second Life with the NMC.”
- Choose “Create My Account” and complete the form on the following page.
- Because of our cooperative efforts with NMC, you may also choose to join the NMC Community by either completing NMC's Web form (choose “Join the NMC Community”) or by joining the group from within SL. (Joining the NMC Community in SL is optional.)
- Once your account has been created, you will receive e-mail notification with your avatar name and system password.
- If you have not done so previously, download/install the Second Life Client.
- It is recommended that you personalize your SL password before entering SL. Visit the Second Life home page and choose “Resident Login” (upper right corner); enter avatar name and system password; in the right hand column under “Your Account,” choose “Password” and follow the instructions.

Start up SL, and (automatically) proceed to the NMC Orientation Island.
- Note: This is a special orientation island for educators. If you don’t get an account from the URL listed in Step 2, you will proceed to the normal Orientation Island. Many find this a non-optimal experience. If you are stuck there, look for a sign in the middle of the island that allows you to leave without completing the tutorials there.
- Upon logging in to SL for the first time, a popup box containing the Second Life Terms of Service will appear; you will need to “Accept” these in order to proceed.
- Following the Terms of Service, a second popup will appear containing the Second Life Community Standards. Please read these (you will not be asked to click “Accept”).
- You will next be prompted to choose either a male or female avatar shape. You may choose either; the gender of your avatar may be changed at any time in SL. You will be provided with a “basic” avatar that you may modify in many ways—from minor adjustments to an entirely different avatar—at any time. Adjustments may take only moments, or much longer, depending on how much you want to change your appearance.
- You will arrive at the NMC Orientation Island, at which point you may follow the arrows and signs to acquire new skills, to begin learning more about Second Life, to acquire some freebies for your inventory of clothing and objects, and then begin exploring Second Life.
