Beatrice Malone
Ms. Beatrice Malone has taught business and management courses at UMUC since fall 1996. To date, she has taught 34 courses. She holds a Master's degree in Human Resources–Training and Development from Marymount University and a B.A. in International Studies from Ohio State University. Bea has served as a content expert and peer reviewer in the development of three online courses (BMGT 398T, BMGT 395, and BMGT 388I). She is an active member of the business and management faculty, serving on the assistant dean's small business/entrepreneurship committee that reviews curricula. She also serves the Prior Learning program as an evaluator of student portfolios.

Bea consistently receives the highest ratings on student course evaluations. She is committed to the philosophy that "adults learn by doing" and that "teaching is only successful when learners can perform the tasks in their actual working conditions." True to this philosophy, she has successfully enhanced her courses with a wide variety of hands-on, creative assignments. One student nominating her for this award wrote, "Ms. Malone presented case studies and class challenges....she gave us a chance to [utilize] our past work experience as a reference and model [upon which] to build our own theories." Another student wrote of her, "Ms Malone brought out the best in each of us. Each class member gave 110%. We shall never forget this class—there has never been an educational experience like it!"

JoAnne Hildebrand
Ms. JoAnne Hildebrand began teaching at UMUC in 1984. She has been absolutely essential to the growth and success of the Fire Science program. JoAnne received her M.A. in Counseling and Personnel Services and her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is nationally recognized and respected as a presenter and author on the subject of fire science. She is also a sponsor in UMUC's Cooperative Education program and has served as a peer mentor to UMUC faculty. JoAnne's philosophy of teaching is to "Be prepared!"

She explains, "A prepared teacher is responsive and flexible to students' and the larger societal needs.... A prepared teacher has an armament for teaching creatively."

JoAnne's students respect and seek her advice as a faculty member and mentor. One student who nominated her for this award wrote, "I have taken three of her regular courses and have her as a co-op sponsor.... I have come away with a solid degree that will help me with...my career...." Another wrote, "[JoAnne] counsels students, works on marketing material, teaches students about managing fire-related organizations, and demonstrates the meaning of professionalism in the fire administration/fire safety field. I sometimes wonder how she has become so highly respected by those in the National Fire Academy and other key fire related organizations. The answer is through hard work, thoroughness, knowledge of the field, and ability to convey important information in a concise way. That is why JoAnne is one of the finest teachers...at UMUC. We [students] are very lucky to have her."
