Accessibility in Distance Education (ADE)

A.D.E. site screen.Media: Web site

Description: A faculty resource that explains how to develop online learning materials that are accessible to people with disabilities. The site is composed of five major sections targeting common accessibility questions and issues (What is Accessibility, Legal Issues, Understanding Disabilities, How-To and Best Practices). In addition to detailed instructions, it includes case studies, audio clips, and examples that describe challenges that students with disabilities face in the online classroom. The Web site itself was extensively tested to meet accessibility requirements.

Clients: UMUC Center for Accessibility in Distance Education (CADE); NEC Foundation of America; Verizon Foundation

Services provided: The CVU worked with CADE to define content requirements, then recommended a Web site design that was both accessible and instructionally sound. It rewrote content provided by accessibility experts to make it more suitable for the online environment, and added instructions and examples as appropriate. The CVU also coordinated production, including Web site development (graphics and programming) and audio development (recording, editing, encoding, and transcript development). Finally, it managed the revision process and completed extensive accessibility testing.
