Purposes of Assessment
Assessment of student learning outcomes is done primarily for purposes of program
improvement. Other purposes include, but are not limited to, providing evidence about
student performance to program reviewers; providing information to guide planning and

" by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education
This 1996 publication by the body that is responsible for accrediting
the University of Maryland University College outlines the recommended
approach to outcomes assessment. It covers the importance of assessment
for improvement, for institutional effectiveness, and for accountability.
Outlines developing and implementing an assessment program: engaging
faculty in assessment, guiding principles for college assessment,
focusing on key programs (general education, the major field of
study, basic skills education, personal and social development,
and graduate and professional education).
