Welcome to the Assessment Tools page of the UMUC-ARC. This section provides links to a selective collection of assessment tests and instruments that can be used to facilitate program, course and student learning outcomes assessment.

Disclaimer: The inclusion of any specific tool to this list does not indicate our endorsement or recommendation of that particular tool. Our intent is simply to make visitors to our site aware of the existence of such tools/instruments.


The Survey System
Described as the most complete software package available for working with questionnaires. The Survey System handles all phases of survey projects, from creating questionnaires through data entry, interviewing or Web surveys to producing tables, graphics and text reports that make you look good.

Classroom Assessment Techniques (CAT)
This site goes over different CATs and details which techniques are applicable to different types of classes.

Student Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG) Instrument
"The Student Assessment of Learning Gains Instrument is designed for instructors from all disciplines who wish to learn more about how students evaluate various course elements in terms of how much they have gained from them." 

The "Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory"
This instrument assesses an individual's ability to adapt to new surroundings and interact with different individuals from different backgrounds.

The Test Locator is a joint project of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Assessment and Evaluation, the Library and Reference Services Division of the Educational Testing Service, the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, the Region III Comprehensive Center at GW University, and Pro-Ed test publishers.

FAST- The Free Assessment Summary Tool
A simple online tool for assessing students'impressions of their courses and teaching. "Using the software does not cost anything so if this is your first visit, become a user and see if FAST would be useful for you and your students." 

Assessment Instrument Resource Page
Includes description and pricing information on assessment instruments such as CSXQ - College Student Expectations Questionnaire; CSEQ - College Student Experiences Questionnaire; CIRP - Cooperative Institutional Research Program and more. 

Basics of Developing Questionnaires by Carter McNamara, Ph.D.
Provides a guideline for creating questions for surveys and focus groups. Also provides links for further resources in this area. 

Pearson NCS Survey Research Tools
A web page on survey research tools. The library has lots of articles about surveys, one or two about qualitative research.

Clearinghouse on Environmental and Student Development Assessment Instruments
This Clearinghouse sponsored by Commission IX - Assessment for Student Development houses brief descriptions of assessment instruments and the addresses used to acquire the instruments as well as full descriptions of the isntruments and brief reviews.

Exam Manager
"Exam Manager is an educational delivery and testing tool that can be used in any institution that administers multiple-choice and case based study exams. Exam Manager enables Faculty users to electronically create, manage, and administer exams, while delivering an educational resource of study materials to Student users. Students, at their individual pace, can prepare for real exams with confidence, and may be able to review exams that were administered in the past."

NWREL Assessment Resource Library
The NW Regional Educational Laboratory's "Assessment Resource Library contains over a thousand student assessment tools and related items, listed in over 700 subject headings, and all concern assessment for grades Kindergarten through Twelve. For a standardized fee, you can borrow any of the materials you might find."

Toolkit98
The NWREL's "Toolkit98 is designed to assist classroom teachers to become better assessors of student learning. The primary users of Toolkit98 are intended to be those who have responsibility to coordinate and facilitate professional development in assessment for teachers."

SNAP Survey Software
A survey software for questionnaire design, data entry and analysis. SNAP publishes interviews, collects and analyses all forms of web, internet, email, scanning, paper and interviewer CE surveys.
