Graduate Department of Education
The department has three master’s degree programs currently. The Master of Arts in Teaching for Initial Secondary Certification (MAT), the Masters of Education in Instructional Technology (MEd) and the Master of Distance Education and E-Learning (MDE). The first two, the MAT and the MEd constitute for NCATE purposes the professional education unit because they prepare professional educators for roles in K-12 schools. The MEd has a certificate program on Instructional Technology Integration. This certificate program has been adapted for language teachers through UMUC’s partnership with American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
The third program, the MDE , which is aimed at professionals seeking to develop knowledge and skills related to management and training, does not have as its purpose the preparation of K-12 educators. This program is distinguished by its Technology-Enhanced Learning (CEL) accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). The MDE also has several specializations and certificate programs.
NCATE Accreditation Candidacy
UMUC's Graduate Department of Education is proud to have earned candidacy for accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, known as NCATE. Candidacy status means that the Graduate Department of Education has met preconditions for accreditation but is not accredited. This candidacy covers the Master of Arts in Teaching program for initial teacher certification and the Master of Education in Instructional Technology. However, the candidacy does not include individual education courses that the department offers to P-12 educators for professional development, relicensure, or other purposes.
Both the MAT and the MEd in Instructional Technology are approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. The MAT is also approved the Maryland State Department of Education as a professional education program leading to state teacher certification. UMUC is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
