MAT and MEd Entry, Retention and Completion Requirements

Transition Points

Program transition points exist to ensure candidate progress and meet candidate needs in a timely manner. Transition points enable analysis of program progression and enable graduation projection and determinations of eligibility. In order for candidates to pass through transition points, they must meet the following criteria.

Summary of MAT Transition Points

MAT program entry

    1. Apply to the Graduate School and provide at least a bachelor's degree transcript from a regionally accredited college or university.
    2. Complete a major in the content area for which certification will be sought and provide evidence of a 2.75 GPA in the major.
    3. Alternatively, and subject to UMUC approval, candidates must complete 30 credits in content-related courses and earn a 2.75 GPA in these courses.
    4. Earn Maryland-specified qualifying scores on the Praxis I, ACT, GRE, or SAT exams.
    5. Be admitted to the Graduate School and to the MAT program.
      Note: an applicant may take the first course if only one content background course is needed for full admission, but may only move forward to the second course when this course requirement is met.

MAT candidacy (after first course, EDTP 600)

    1. Earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher, or be placed on probation.
    2. Complete UCSP 615 Orientation to Graduate Studies at UMUC.

MAT entry to internship

    1. Complete the first 24 credits in the program.
    2. Earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher, or be placed on probation.
    3. Pass the university-required content assessment, e.g., Praxis II Content Test.

MAT eligibility for graduation

    1. Meet all course requirements, including field and clinical experiences.
    2. Earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
    3. Provide official evidence of Praxis II Pedagogy Test registration.

Note: MAT 2011-2012 Graduates' average GPA at program completion = 3.75

Summary of MEd Transition Points

MEd program entry

    1. Apply to the Graduate School and provide at least a bachelor's degree transcript from a regionally accredited college or university.
    2. Be admitted into the Graduate School. 

MEd candidacy

    1. Receive 3.0 in the first course (EDTC 600), or earn a 3.0 GPA in the semester during which the first course is taken.
    2. Complete UCSP 615 Orientation to Graduate Studies at UMUC within the first 6 credits of program.

MEd entry to the capstone course

    1. Complete the first 24 credits in the program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, or be placed on probation. 

MEd eligibility for graduation

    1. Complete all MEd course requirements with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
