Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program
Student Field Experiences and Internship Handbooks
University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is committed to developing and certifying teachers who demonstrate research-based and practice-validated strategies for teaching and learning. In this context, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program aims to cultivate reflective teachers who not only create a learning culture where students exist at the center of the educational situation; but, who also teach with the conviction that all students can learn at high levels. UMUC believes that in order to nurture the highest levels of professionalism in teacher candidates, the candidates must be immersed in the experiences of the PreK-12 schools, both to observe and to teach. Therefore, the MAT program is inherently a clinically- based teacher development program, where the courses in the program underpin the field and clinical experiences in which the teacher candidates participate throughout the program. The handbooks here will give more details about the course-by-course Field Experiences and Internship requirements.
