In addition to the projects, the trip involved several other activities focusing on Chinese business and cultural issues. A particularly enjoyable experience from the students' point of view was the opportunity to stay for three days on the campus of one of Shanghai's major universities—East China Normal University. The UMUC students had the opportunity to engage Chinese business students in lively discussions on the cultural differences in approaching business issues and also to hear from Chinese professors about developments in China's economy and finance system.
In Shanghai, the UMUC students also attended briefings from the American Chamber of Commerce, Baker & McKenzie law firm, and other experts on China's economy and business environment.
In Beijing, the students heard from a renowned Chinese professor from Beijing University on Chinese history and visited Beijing United Family Hospital, the first U.S.-owned joint venture hospital in China. Naturally, there was time for the essential visits to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square.
Many of the students would agree with one of their number who concluded that "This trip was by far the most rewarding experience of my academic career."
