(Adelphi, MD) – University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and the U.S. Naval War College have established an agreement to enable US Navy officers to earn a new online Master of Science in Management - Naval Operations and National Security degree at UMUC. UMUC President Gerald Heeger and Rear Admiral Rodney P. Rempt, Naval War College president, will sign the agreement Dec. 11 in Newport, R.I.

The partnership will enable both officers currently enrolled in the War College non-resident program and those who have already completed that program to earn the new UMUC degree as long as they can complete necessary coursework in seven years, starting from the time they began at Naval War College. Students will transfer 18 credits from three core courses at the War College, then complete seven more UMUC management courses. After completion, those who wish may pursue a UMUC master’s of business administration (MBA) degree online by taking only three more courses.

"This is a great opportunity for Naval War College students worldwide," said Rempt. "Online education is a major pat of our future and this agreement allows us to take advantage of the resources of a remarkable institution."

By successfully completing the master’s degree at UMUC, navy officers will achieve two important career milestones: earning a graduate degree from UMUC and Joint Professional Military Education certification from NWC.

"UMUC is uniquely suited to design and to provide educational programs to naval officers because of our over 54 years of experience delivering educational services to US service members in the United States and worldwide," said Heeger, who was a guest lecturer at the Naval War College in the late 1970s. "Coupled with our expertise in online education, these programs can reach even more members of our country’s armed forces. I know firsthand that Naval War College students are among the most diligent and I look forward to their success."

In addition to its wealth of online academic offerings, UMUC online student services, including library/information services with about 90 databases, will be accessible to naval students at UMUC.

Established in 1884, the NWC is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and prepares officers from all branches of the armed services for the remainder of their careers by providing them with a professional military education based on a clear understanding of the fundamental principles which have governed national security affairs in peace and in war throughout history.
