(Adelphi, MD) – University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and the Army Management Staff College (AMSC) have established an agreement to enable AMSC graduates to earn a new online Master of Science in Management – Army Sustaining Base Management degree at UMUC. UMUC Provost Nicholas Allen and Ursula Lohman, dean of academics at AMSC, will sign the agreement April 22 at Fort Belvoir, Va.

The partnership will enable both students currently enrolled in AMSC’s Sustaining Base Leadership and Management non-resident and resident programs and those who have already completed either program to earn the new UMUC degree if they can complete necessary coursework in seven years, starting from the time they began at AMSC.

"The Army Management Staff College – UMUC relationship provides AMSC graduates a golden opportunity to greatly enhance and update their education—and obtain a well recognized degree in management—leveraging their AMSC education in the process," said Lohman. "It's a golden opportunity for people to enhance their career potential within the Army and help meet the Army's needs for dynamic leaders who understand the sustaining base within which the Army operates – a win-win situation!"

AMSC graduates will transfer 15 credits from the College, then complete six more UMUC management courses and two end-of-program courses for a total of 39 credits. After completion, those who wish may pursue a UMUC master’s of business administration (MBA) degree online by taking only three more courses.

The UMUC portion of the new degree is available completely online, though students who wish may take classes at appropriate sites throughout northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., or Maryland.

"UMUC is ideally suited to complement educational programs at military bases such as the one at the Army Management Staff College," said Allen. "We have a long and proud history of serving the U.S. military that is not an off-shoot program, but a central focus of our existence as a university. Our expertise today in leadership/management principles reinforces the foundation the AMSC provides."

In addition to its wealth of online academic offerings, UMUC online student services, including library/information services with about 90 databases, will be accessible to AMSC graduates at UMUC.

For more information about the new degree program at UMUC, call James Cronin, UMUC director, Department of Defense program management, 240-684-5151 or Jane Turner, AMSC registrar at 703-807-4756/4757. Or, simply visit either organization’s Web site at www.umuc.edu or www.amsc.belvoir.army.mil.
