The U.S. Navy has selected University of Maryland University College (UMUC) as one of 16 colleges and universities to offer distance-learning degrees to sailors as part of Navy College Program partnerships to be launched in January. Institutions chosen for the Navy program will provide full degree programs and support recruiting and retention efforts.

According to Richard Danzig, Navy secretary, the universities’ experience with distance learning was key to their selection for the Navy partnership. Another deciding factor was transferability of the academic institution’s courses to other Navy College Program partner institutions to support the mobile lifestyle of sailors.

UMUC is the leader in providing distance education to the US military, having approximately 47,000 service members in 29 countries taking UMUC courses last year. Increasing numbers of US military enroll in online courses and programs, choosing from 14 undergraduate and 12 master’s degrees, including the MBA, completely online, as well as over 40 online certificate programs and a complete array of online student services, critical to the success of online students.

UMUC will support the Navy College Program by offering associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in three academic programs: management studies, computer studies and paralegal studies. These degree programs will support a number of Navy occupational specialties, or ratings, and transfer college credit from the military rating training into the degree program. As the Navy College Program expands distance learning degree options for sailors, UMUC will work closely with the Navy to satisfy additional degree requirements.
