Steps for Moving from Modules to
Lesson Plans
Professors should never enter their classrooms without a lesson
plan. None of us is so good as to be able to teach every session off the top of our
heads. There follow a set of simple steps for moving from module to teaching with a
plan.
- Be aware of your overall course objectives. Each lesson should at least tie to
one of your long term objectives.
- With your course objectives in mind, review the module you wish to teach and draw up
a set of short-term, achievable, and demonstrable goals. It should be obvious, but
often is not, that your teaching and your students' learning are best measured via goals
set and obtained.
- With your short-term goals in mind, select those items from the module that best help
you teach the material. There is no rule that says you have to use every item in
every module. Be selective.
- Having selected the modular items you desire to use, design activities, discussions,
and study projects aimed at presenting the material in such a way that your students will
be able to achieve the goals you have set.
It is not necessary to draw up lessons plans for the entire course of study in
advance. It is wise, however, to always have plans to cover at least a third of your
course at a time. |
