I have served on FAC for the past 4 years and am seeking reelection. I've been an Adjunct Professor of Economics in the Undergraduate School since 2004. I am also an Adjunct Professor of Human Resource Management in the Graduate School.
Since I started at UMUC, I've attended every Fall and Spring faculty meeting but one -- when I was unavoidably out of town. As a graduate of the City College of New York, I am a strong believer in quality public higher education. (I also have an M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University.)
My previous academic positions have included full-time stints at the City University of New York, Rider College, and the University of Utah and adjunct positions at the University of Illinois, Baker College, Nova Southeastern University, Keller Graduate School of Management, Rutgers University, Monmouth College, and the New School for Social Research. (UMUC is the only school that I am currently teaching at.)
My nonacademic positions have included five years as a Research Associate at The Conference Board, Inc. and tours of active duty as an Army Reserve officer. (I served more than 30 years in the Army Reserve and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.)
Since 1987, I have been an economist at the US Department of Labor. Throughout this period, I have spoken out on behalf of my fellow Department of Labor employees.
The strength of any university is its faculty. FAC is currently a purely advisory body. The administration feels no obligation to follow our advice, but recently they have at least listened more closely to FAC's recommendations.
During my 4 years of service on FAC, I have helped craft resolutions in favor of a greater, and more productive, role for faculty in the life of the university. I am currently serving as the FAC representative on the 3-person working group advising Acting President Miyares on "meet and confer". I was also elected by FAC as an alternate delegate to the Council of University System Faculty. In all of these positions, I have pressed for meaningful reform. If reelected, I will continue to advocate strongly for quality education by faculty who are properly compensated and afforded respect and security.
A few years ago, the administration increased maximum class size from 28 to 34 without consulting FAC. The increase in class size and the recent shortening of terms to 8 weeks (also done without adequate consultation with FAC) have made it more difficult for faculty to give the time and effort required to assess each student's understanding of the material. I intend to pursue vigorously ways to protect ourselves and our students.
Some form of employment security should be offered to faculty who have shown, through years of exemplary service, their ability to teach effectively. Present faculty should not be passed over in favor of new hires. "Meet and confer" should be implemented in a manner that will maximize our rights at the university.
