Susan Malone - 2012 FAC Representative
Division: GMST Adelphi
Program: Social and Behavioral Sciences, Writing and MBA
Hi! My name is Susan Malone, and I live in Jacksonville, Florida. Since mid-spring of 2004, I've been teaching online for UMUC. I started in Social and Behavioral Sciences and moved into Communications/Writing courses. for UMUC. And for the last year, I've been teaching MBA Fundamentals. I've also mentored co-op students in the communications program as well as new social sciences faculty. Plus I've called more than 2,000 students as part of the many phone campaigns we have had to remind them to register for classes. I've also worked as an advisor for the Effective Writing Center. I have a PhD in sociology from the University of Florida, a master's degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a bachelor's degree in journalism from West Virginia University. My prior teaching experience includes leading courses for the Walt Disney World College Program, the University of Florida Department of Sociology, the University of North Florida's health education master's degree program and Santa Fe Community College's Department of Sociology. And I've worked as a telecommunications project manager for Merrill Lynch for five years. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, aerobics, and travel.
I'm honored to have been elected to FAC for 2007-08 and would be thrilled to serve again. Although I live in Florida, I visit the UMUC campus several times a year for faculty meetings, writing conferences and FAC meetings. (And I hope I have met you!) The accomplishment I am most proud of is that I helped to publicize adjuncts' ability to participate in the defined contribution retirement plans (401k and 403b) through the university; although adjuncts are not eligible for matching contributions from the university, they can still participate in these valuable plans and save money on a tax deferred basis. I've also written for the FAC newsletter and moderated several faculty fora. I think our administration wants to hear our feedback and that the FAC offers an effective conduit to that end. Thank you for your support.
