Barbara Mann - 2014 FAC Representative

Barbara J. Mann (or Barb as she prefers to be called) serves as the Associate Director for Public Services, UMUC Library, since February 2013. Having been at UMUC since July 2006, first as Instruction and Information Literacy Librarian (July-October 2006) and Assistant Director for Public Services (October 2006-February 2013), she recently was promoted to Librarian IV, the highest faculty librarian ranking. She also serves as an adjunct professor teaching the graduate-level required, non-credit course Orientation to Graduate Studies (UCSP 615). Ms. Mann represents the Library on The Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and currently serves as a member of the LEO Term Working Team. She has been involved in other university initiatives and has worked with faculty as the Library liaison to The Undergraduate School's Communication, Arts, and Humanities (COMM) and currently for The Graduate School's Education Department.
Before coming to UMUC, Ms. Mann served as Information Literacy Coordinator at the University of Southern Maine. While there she served as the Libraries representative to the General Education reform initiative and was heavily involved in this process. Ms. Mann began her professional career at Emory University as a reference, instruction, and collection management librarian.
Ms. Mann obtained her MLIS from the University of South Carolina via distance education and has taken additional master's level course work at Emory University. Ms. Mann has co-authored peer-reviewed articles and book chapters pertaining to research and information literacy instruction, as well as co-authoring the book International Government Information and Country Information: A Subject Guide (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 2004). In addition, she has presented papers and workshops regarding information literacy instruction for distance learners at national, regional, and local conferences. Ms. Mann was a recipient of The Graduate School's Faculty Research Grant for spring 2013.
Ms. Mann is a graduate of the highly-selective Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Institute for Information Literacy Immersion '05: Program Track and was honored to receive the prestigious national 2012 ACRL Instruction Section Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award. In addition, she is heavily involved in the American Library Association and has served as an officer in three of its divisions.
