Autobiography

I taught for the Department of Economics and Finance at UMUC since 1/01. My post-secondary teaching includes teaching approximately 1,900 semester hours of classes in Accounting, Finance, Management, Statistics and Decision Sciences, Health, Business Strategy, and Marketing since 1978. This includes a 12 year stint as a full-time faculty member at SUNY at Oswego. Over the years, I taught on the U.S. mainland, in Puerto Rico, on the U.S. Naval Base at GTMO, in the Netherlands, and on-line, using a number of different interfaces.

My non-teaching experience includes eight years as C.E.O. of a small publishing company, one year as President of a small company involved in petroleum research, four years as an Area Sales Representative for a Fortune 500 company, and more than two years in management with a major retailer where I supervised a staff which varied between 100 and 300. I also worked three years in technical/clinical areas as a Laboratory Technician, Senior Laboratory Technician, and Chemist.

I am a husband, father, and grandfather. I am a dog lover, a fly fisherman, play guitar and sing a bit when time permits, hold PADI Advanced Open Water certification. I am Board Certified in Stress Management, Board Certified in University Crisis Response, hold a Diplomate in Clinical Hypnotherapy, and am a Fellow of the American Association of Professional Hypnotherapists. Further, I am a Certified Registered Arbitrator, and most recently completed the Basic and Advanced Certificate programs through Faculty Development at UMUC.

Although this biographical sketch is somewhat limited, it should provide some insight into my breadth of interests and experiences.

Nomination Essay

I was honored to work on your behalf as a member of the Faculty Advisory Council over the past two years. In this capacity, I helped facilitate a number of changes I honestly believe to be significant improvements for UMUC faculty (and students). The changes which started over the past six months are profound in my opinion, and I very much hope to continue working with our new Acting President and Acting Provost to continue improving UMUC for all our stakeholders. In my opinion, the most important issues we are currently working on are related to Shared Governance, and balancing bureaucratic efficiency with educational effectiveness.

As I mentioned in my biographical sketch, I worked in post-secondary education for what is approaching 35 years. Over this period I worked as a full-time faculty member, adjunct faculty member, acting department chair, area coordinator and in a number of other capacities, with a number of institutions. I helped form the business administration honor society chapter at SUNY at Oswego, where I also served as an Alternate Representative to the Faculty Senate; a member of the Summer School and Continuing Education Board; Chairman of the Department of Business Administration Curriculum Committee; the first non-Arts and Sciences member of the Academic Computing Center Board of Governors; Business Administration Department – Library Liaison; Business Administration Department Coordinator with Experience-Based Education; Coordinator for the Student Exchange Program with the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez; a member of the Business Administration Departmental Honors Committee; member of the President's Greek Task Force; and in a number of other functions.

While teaching at the Naval Base at GTMO, I initiated the creation of a student association which transcended the different post-secondary institutions offering classes on the base, as well as facilitating the creation of an articulation agreement which formalized and enhanced acceptance and coordination of courses between the institutions on base.

I tend to be student centered, but with the understanding it is the faculty who are the ultimate strength of any academic institution. I believe each faculty member brings a unique perspectives and set of skills to class. For each faculty member to perform optimally, I believe (s)he should have the ability to construct classes, covering core skills, which allow him/her to teach in the style which best utilizes the individual approach and abilities which work best for the individual faculty member. I do not believe one size fits all. I believe diversity of approaches builds the strength of the institution, and faculty must have the ability to try new approaches to build better classes.

I also believe faculty members are often over-worked and under-paid. This is particularly true for adjunct faculty, who are typically paid considerably less than full-time faculty, usually receive no benefits, and functionally subsidize their employer by providing their own office space, computers, software, and supplies.

Should you choose to vote for my reappointment to the Faculty Advisory Council, I will work to support high academic standards, enhance and protect academic freedom, stimulate support for creativity, and work for a system where there is increased tangible and intangible appreciation of faculty efforts to create an even better UMUC.
