Biography

James J. Stewart is an American who lives and works in Arizona as a professor of management and management technology. He holds the rank of collegiate professor on the faculty of University of Maryland University College (UMUC), earned during his 17 years with UMUC in Europe and the USA.

Stewart earned a doctorate in engineering administration, marketing of technology, and international economics at The George Washington University through after-hours and weekend study. He also holds two master's degrees, one in electronics engineering and one in the technology of management, plus a professional designation in information and computer science.

Nomination Essay

My platform, and reason to wish to again serve on the Faculty Advisory Council, can be expressed simply:

To strengthen UMUC by strengthening the status, compensation and development of its 90% adjunct and one-year/nine-month contract faculty.

My platform is based on the following beliefs:

• UMUC Should Make More than Term-to-Term/Annual Commitments to Its Adjunct and Contract Faculty. This is to provide employment stability and gain their loyalty.

• Adjunct and Contract Faculty Should Be Paid More. To retain our best, we must pay more than competing universities and other part-time employers.

• Adjunct and Contract Faculty Should Be Developed Just As Administrator Faculty Are. Travel, conference attendance and other development opportunities, and the payments therefor, should match those of administrator/professors. We all teach, and students deserve the best-prepared professors, no matter what their employment category is.
