Marcia Watson — Ex Officio Member, FAC and UAC
Position: Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs;
Adjunct Professor, Science and Environmental Management, The Undergraduate School
Marcia Watson serves as the Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs at UMUC and is based in ICC at Adelphi. Her duties involve ensuring that UMUC is in compliance with the academic policies, regulations, and expectations of the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland, the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and the U.S. Department of Education; preparing required reports for the various regulatory bodies; working collaboratively with internal UMUC units to accomplish academic projects; ensuring that all academic program proposals and other projects are completed in a timely manner; and facilitating the shared governance process at UMUC by serving as ex officio member on both the Faculty Advisory Council (FAC) and the University Advisory Council (UAC). Marcia also teaches biology in The Undergraduate School.
Prior to coming to UMUC in January of 2010, Marcia served as an administrator and, earlier, as a faculty member, at her alma mater, the University of Delaware. She holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from UD as well as a B.A. in Psychology. Marcia has taught introductory biology, anatomy and physiology, and endocrinology, and has a special interest in teaching biology for non-science majors. Her former research area dealt with the relationship between circadian (daily) rhythms and seasonal cycles of reproduction in mammals. Although she no longer conducts laboratory research, Marcia maintains an interest in biology and field research through active participation in the Baltimore Bird Club, the Maryland Ornithological Society, the American Birding Association, and the Maryland Entomological Society.
