Textbook Adoption Process

The academic or program director in each discipline approves textbook and course material adoptions. If you have questions about the course materials, consult your academic director or program director for assistance.

Faculty can place various types of materials on electronic reserve, including journal articles, book chapters, lecture notes, and other course-specific materials if they are required reading for students in the course. Instructors who wish to utilize supplemental materials must first receive approval from the academic department. Once you receive approval, contact Information and Library Services to request an electronic reserved reading and notify your academic department regarding the materials on reserve.

Desk Copies

The textbook office will automatically send you the required textbooks and supplemental materials once you are staffed for a class. Course materials are shipped 4-6 weeks prior to the term start date. It is not necessary to contact the textbook office to request desk copies. To avoid delivery delays, please ensure that we have your correct mailing address on file. You can update your personal information through your MyUMUC account.

Common couriers do not deliver to P.O. boxes. If possible, please ensure that a street address is available. If a P.O. box is the preferred address, materials will be shipped through the US Mail.

If you wish to pick up your course materials, please contact us via e-mail at textbooks@umuc.edu to make arrangements. If materials are not in stock, we will order them from the publisher or MBS Direct, which may take 10 - 14 business days for receipt.

Review or Examination Copies

Textbook review and examination copy requests are completed within each academic department and then submitted to the Textbook Office for processing.

Most publishers will grant a 30, 60, or 90-day review, after which a decision must be made to adopt, return, or purchase the book. The decision should be determined prior to the review expiration date. Departments are responsible for notifying the Textbook Office of the decision in order to comply with the publisher's deadline. Departments will be charged for textbooks not adopted or returned to publishers.
